A huarache is a woven leather sandal from Mexico, made by hand since long before industrial shoemaking. The upper is strips of leather woven over the last into a single piece — not cut panels stitched together. The weave is the shoe.
The word comes from Purépecha, the language of what is now Michoacán, and the shoe is older than the Spanish context it often gets described in. It has been made in different forms across much of Mexico, and the weave patterns differ between regions and workshops the way other crafts do. Jalisco and Michoacán are the areas most associated with it.
The word is used today for almost any sandal with some woven-looking section, and most of what sells as huaraches is industrially made, with a weave pattern embossed or stamped into a finished upper.
The difference is structural rather than aesthetic. A real huarache is woven by hand over the last, strip by strip, by someone who has done it before. It takes time, no two come out identical, and it is also why it shapes to the foot in a way a pressed upper never does.
Close, and closer than an ordinary sandal. Huaraches are worn barefoot and the leather stretches around the foot — a pair that fits perfectly across the ball in the shop is loose a month later. The openings in the weave give, and the foot settles into the shoe rather than the other way round. The length gives nothing, so tight means across, not short. They should not pinch, but they should hold.
Vegetable-tanned leather darkens with sun and wear and takes up oil from the skin. A pair looks different after a season than it did new, and two pairs worn by different people look different from each other. It is leather that keeps changing rather than simply wearing out.
